Every room in the house should have a purpose, and a lot of people are keen to add a room that’s specifically for a very important purpose: unwinding. After all, these days, it can be hard to find the time for those all-important evenings where it’s just you, your loved ones, and a favorite activity. One of the best ways to bump up leisure time on your priority list? Make a dedicated space.

But what goes in your snug to make it feel especially “snug”? If you’re already there in terms of furnishings, you might be looking at how to ensure this is an activity-focused space that’s totally focused on downtime. Let’s look at what your snug should include if so.

A Games Area

First up, games. With 3.32 billion active gamers these days, a huge number of the folks interested in creating at-home leisure spaces will want to make a dedicated spot for their gaming fun. Of course, games can be played from just a cell phone these days, especially if you just like browser games and casino games – but even if you’re not going for a big screen, you should make a dedicated spot.

We’d recommend using a large rug to denote the area, and of course, comfy seating. If you’re into multiplayer games, make sure there are enough spots for everyone. If you’re a single-player fan, you can just go for a comfy, supportive armchair – but make sure it’s one that won’t leave you feeling stiff and achy after a session. Say you enjoy a good game of roulette and you just want to crash out and unwind for a decent chunk of time. You should set up the space to maximize these moments so you’re as comfy and relaxed as possible.

To help with this, grab a coffee table for drinks and snacks, and a few supportive cushions so you can shift around comfortably every time you take a break (and don’t forget, breaks are important). Adding a light, soft throw is the perfect way to ensure you’re nice and snug while you enjoy your roulette game, and you should also consider a fan for the hotter days. You can then watch the wheel spin in the ultimate comfort, always at the perfect temperature, with snacks and drinks on hand.

Roulette’s a particularly great game for this sort of space because it offers both relaxation and thrill: anyone who has ever tried it will know that watching the wheel spin is deliciously exciting and engaging, but you’re putting all your faith in chance. No complicated rulebooks, no difficult explanations, no lore or challenging button combos. Just gaming fun in its simplest form. Of course, there are other options that fit this category, with a myriad of slots games like Gold Rush providing fast-paced and low-challenge fun.

And if you’ve got a blank wall in your games space, don’t forget that you can either use it to display some game-related artwork (who wouldn’t love a classy roulette wheel with its iconic colors?), or pick another piece of art that helps you feel relaxed and happy about the space. You’ll soon feel utterly at ease.

What’s more, if you’ve got a good games setup, you can often have it double as a movie corner. A projector adds flexibility if you don’t have much space, eliminating the need for a big screen. Toss a bag of popcorn in the microwave and get settled in for a film marathon, with the option to swap in games without ever leaving your seat!

A Book Nook

This has a delightful ring to it, and it’s something every leisure space should have. A cozy, quiet spot where you can read (or engage in other non-screen activities like crochet, coloring, drawing, journaling, etc.).

Ideally, this should be alongside a window so you can maximize natural light. If it’s possible, consider creating a window seat, softened with scatter cushions and another snuggly throw for the cold evenings. Remember to add some storage for whatever kind of activity you’ll be doing – bookshelves or drawers can work well, or opt for plastic crates if you’ll have yarn or other bulky materials. This keeps the space uncluttered and suitably soothing.

A good lamp will also be important if you’ll be using this space after dark. Nobody wants to strain their eyes while they’re unwinding, after all. Add another snugly rug to delineate this area and help yourself mentally transition into quiet relaxation when you step into it.

If you’re artistically inclined, you could even decorate this corner with your own creations – maybe crochet your own throw, or frame some of your pictures. Creating art can boost your happiness, so don’t be afraid to fill this hobby corner with things that bring you joy, and then showcase your creations afterward.

A Meditation Zone

You can meditate anywhere, of course, but meditating in a space that’s designed for it can be far more relaxing and effective. Maybe you want to bring yourself back to the present after a particularly exciting round of roulette, or you want a break from an intense chapter in your book. Create a little corner just for this. You don’t need a huge amount of space!

You’ll want a soft lamp (mood lights or fairy lights could work well here) and a selection of scents you find relaxing. Lavender pillows, essential oils, or natural scented candles could all work well. Add a comfy sitting spot, whether that’s a chair that will improve your posture or a cork mat on the floor. Some people find having a rolled-up blanket to sit on the edge of improves their posture, so keep one handy.

If you find music helpful, add a CD player or have a dedicated playlist ready on your smartphone, and consider an eye mask. Not sure whether meditation is for you or struggling to get “in the zone”? There are some great hacks here; you can print them out and keep them in your meditation spot if you find them helpful.
